In 1954, Bill Williams started the All-American Sports Club in California. The club attracted members by offering to give away prizes that included MLB players’ signed gloves and bats, and official NCAA basketballs and MLB equipment. In one of the best deals in trading card history, a one dollar membership fee entered club members into a contest to win prizes and entitled each member to receive 500 sports hero pictures, a lifetime membership in the club, a membership button, and a subscription to the club’s news bulletin.
The 500 cards the members received for one dollar formed what collectors now refer to as the 1955 All-American Sports Club Hand Cut set, which arrived in the mail in sheets of 32. The set included Bill Russell, Mickey Mantle, Jack Kramer, Sam Snead, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campenella, Yogi Berra, Willie Mays, Duke Snyder, Stan Musial, Pee Wee Reese, Frank Gifford, and George Mikan.
Club membership also included 10 blank membership applications to sign up neighbors and friends to encourage members to form local club chapters. The club’s first bulletin featured the Sports Hero of the Month Willie Mays. The club promoted good sportsmanship, good fellowship, and fair play—a sign of the times in the 1950s when society emphasized the importance of good conduct. The club’s bulletin also provided updates on players and offered additional prizes to club presidents based on how many members they signed up for their local chapters. They mailed in completed applications to claim the prizes, which included different sports equipment such as golf clubs, mitts, bats, baseballs, tennis rackets, and basketballs. Williams, a sports enthusiast, started the club to generate interest in sports and to promote good manners on and off the field.
Since the club only distributed these cards in sets of 500 to club members, these cards are extremely rare and continue to gain in popularity as they represent the second oldest set of basketball cards in existence—and the first set since the 1948 Bowman set. The set also contains many of the brightest stars from the era. Bill Russell is the most sought-after card in the set because it is his first card. It features a black and white headshot of a youthful Russell with a blank back. The determination in his eyes offers a harbinger of what is to come.
PSA has only graded 26 examples of this rare card. Four other examples earned a PSA 9 and only two examples have received a PSA 10. Following Bill Russell’s tragic passing, collectors have been reminded of his history-making career on and off the basketball court. As a result, the popularity of his earliest cards such as this ‘55 issue continue to gain steam.
