| Video Discription | Considering the success of the Outback, the Forester, the Crosstrek, and the new Atlas 3-row crossover, it’s safe to say that Subaru isn’t relying on sports cars to butter its bread. But don’t fool yourself, this is a company with deep performance roots. And that’s what makes the new WRX STI S209 so significant. This is the most advanced sports car Subaru has ever made. A standard WRX offers 268 horsepower, which gets bumped to 310 when engineered to STI specifications. But this track-focused STI raises that number even higher, to 341. Outside, the design is dominated by the 19-inch gold wheels, carbon fiber roof, and prominent rear wing. These cars will be available in very limited numbers, but when you see one, you’ll easily be able to differentiate it from a run-of-the-mill WRX. No offense to BRZ owners, but a Subaru wouldn’t really be a Subaru without all-wheel drive. Staying true to the company’s rally roots, all-wheel drive is standard on the S209, and it benefits from a limited-slip differential to help it tear through tight corners. This isn’t Subaru’s first time modifying the WRX STI for track-day enthusiasts. But previous iterations, the S208 and S207, weren’t available Stateside—only buyers in Japan could enjoy them. Starting as early as late 2019, that will change. |
