This is a quick demonstration that a 3 phase motor can and will run off of single phase. I’m running this motor at half voltage and only one coil instead of the normal three it was designed for. So it’s only developing a fraction of its rated power and only drawing a small portion of the power it normally would.
I mentioned this motor is destined for my 14” wood bandsaw to metal bandsaw conversion project. It’s getting a Variable Frequency Drive to use single phase power to run a 3 phase motor at full power and variable RPM. This project is pretty cool and I’ll go over using a VFD in your shop projects in a future video.
Leave a comment below if you have questions regarding this. While I demonstrated it can run, this motor isn’t really all that usable in this situation. It doesn’t have much power. Think about this. I’m using only one coil out of three and only at half voltage. So roughly it’s developing 1/6 of 1/2 HP or 1/12 of a HP. Great for demonstration purposes, but not for actual use.
Pretty neat to see it work though. 👍🏼 |
