Oprah. How did that happen? MOTT: It was very well known within the Bulls organization that I had the eyes and the ears of a lot of the players, on a very personal, friendship, big brother-little brother way. When Oprah called, they wanted to do a show on people with really cool jobs. So the first person they wanted to talk to was George (Koehler) — he was the guy with the beard, the limo driver who picked him up when he was a rookie. They developed a relationship as his right-hand man. George isn’t going to do or say anything that Jordan doesn’t want him to do. So that fell by the wayside quickly. They asked who else in the organization really has a cool job, and everyone in the organization said, “It’s got to be Chris Mott.” So their producers called me up and said they were interested in doing a show. We set up a time to go to the Berto Center in Deerfield. We spent several hours. I basically produced all the segments. I would come up with the ideas and they would film it. We spent a few hours there. The episode aired, and it turned into something unbelievable, because during Bulls games there would be sections of fans yelling, “Oprah boy! Oprah boy!” They would put my picture on the screen and put “Oprah Boy” up there. The players would be ripping me during the game. And it became a phenomenon. |
