His father, Vinod Raj is a native of Paramakudi and ran away from home to start a business.However his father was not successful and he only acted in supporting roles in Tamil films and TV series, which prompted him to take part in Vikrama drama lessons and by training professionally in classical and cinematic dance forms he became a leading actor.Vikram's mother Rajeswari was a sub-collector and his brother Thiagarajan was an established director-actor in Tamil cinema; His son is actor Prasanth, Vikram's first cousin. Vikram has an elder sister, Anita, a teacher and an elder brother, Arvind. Vikram graduated in 1983 from Montfort School, Yercaud, a boarding school in the hills near Salem. He said that he used the opportunities available to him in school and learned karate and swimming.
