| Video Discription | Italian border patrol agents in Venice stopped Ali Shaker on December 4th and found a five-year-old Afghan boy hiding in his suitcase. Ali Shaker, 35, boarded a ferry in Patras, Greece, with the boy. known only as Assim, inside his 60cm x 30cm suitcase. A hole in the suitcase provided him with air. According to the border patrol agent, Shaker was "incredibly calm" when he was stopped. "He carefully put the suitcase on the table... looked at the sky and opened the suitcase," said the agent. Shaker claimed that the boy's parents asked him to take him to family friends in Germany. Assim is believed to be from the Hazara ethnic group from central Afghanistan. Assim is in the care of a non-governmental organization in Venice while the authorities try to contact his parents. Shaker has been charged with aiding undocumented immigration. |
