| Video Discription | "Absence & Presence" is a printmaking response to the bombing of the bookseller's quarter, Al Mutanabbi Street, in Baghdad on the 5th March 2007. It was exhibited in Exeter Library (UK) and Kaleider (UK) during February-April 2016. This film focuses on the events of the 4th March: the poetry marathon, artist book and bookmark workshops as well as the original prints created by artists from more then 20 countries. Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here is a coalition of more than 500 artists, writers and poets responding to the bombing of the bookseller’s quarter in Baghdad on 5th March 2007. Al-Mutanabbi Street, the historic centre of Baghdad bookselling, holds bookstores and outdoor bookstalls, cafes, stationery shops, and even tea and tobacco shops. It has been the heart and soul of the Baghdad literary and intellectual community. To date there have been four responses to this action: 130 broadsides by letterpress artists, 260 artist books, 125 writers and poets have contributed to the anthology Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here and 260 original prints on the theme of Absence & Presence. Over 500 artists, writers and poets from 25 countries have taken part. Al-Mutanabbi Street, and its books and booksellers, have always welcomed all Iraqis. More than 30 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded. The Al-Mutanabbi Street Coalition is not an anti-war project, nor is it a healing project. The coalition feels that until we truly see what happened on this one winding street of booksellers and readers, on this one day in Baghdad, until we understand all the implications of an attack on the printed word and its writers, printers, booksellers and readers, until we see that this is our street, until then, we cannot truly move forward. |
