The new head coach of China's men's football team Aleksandar Jankovic has set a lofty goal for his side...to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
"World Cup 2026, China must absolutely play", the Serb said at his introduction press conference on Wednesday in Haikou, capital of China's southern Hainan province.
Jankovic, who was appointed to the position in late February, will lead the dragon squad as it prepares for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers.
The coach, who has spent four and a half years in China guiding the national youth team, said he had a clear picture of the current situation of Chinese football, "Over the last 30 months, I spent 28 months watching games in China and observing players not only from the Chinese Super League but from China League One and League two as well. I know all levels of Chinese players well."
The 2026 World Cup will be the first edition of the 48-team tournament, enabling at least eight Asian teams to enter the world football gala. The only time China played in the World Cup was in the 2002 edition hosted in both Japan and South Korea.
Following the press conference by coach Jankovic, China will get to work at its training base in base in Haikou on Thursday..
Jankovic, a former assistant manager of Serbia's under-21 team in the 2000s, also had spells with several European clubs including Serbia's Red Star Belgrade and Belgium's Standard Liege, will make his debut on March 23 when China plays a friendly against New Zealand in Auckland.
He first joined China's U19 B team in September 2018 before taking charge of the reformed Chinese U23 squad in preparation for the postponed Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
He led a mostly U23 squad to the East Asian Football Championship in Japan last July, where his team finished third among four participating teams. |
