| Video Discription | On August 25, 1948 both Alger Hiss and Whittaker Chambers appeared before the House Unamerican Activities Committee. Chambers a former Soviet spy claimed that Hiss was a spy as well. Hiss a former State Department official claimed not to know Chambers and never to have met him. Later documents came to light to show they had met and Hiss was convicted of perjury and sentenced to five years in prison. The question of whether Hiss was or was not a spy was mostly settled in 1990's when Soviet archives opened and seem to show that he was. |
