Shipping connection Alster-Elbe
With the construction of the Niederdamm (today Großer Burstah) in the 12th century and the Oberdamm in the 13th century, the Alster was included in the Alsterfleeten. North of the Oberdamm (today the Jungfernstieg) the water surfaces of the "Great Alster" (today the Inner and Outer Alster) formed.
There was no lock in the upper dam of the Alster until the great Hamburg fire of 1842. The Alster dam on the Oberdamm served not only to regulate the water level of the "Great Alster" but also for the local mills and water features. In addition, there was a chute on the upper dam for flushing the bleaching canal.
The Graskeller lock (as a chamber lock) built in 1530 was located on the Niederdamm between the Großer Buhrstah and Alter Steinweg. It enabled the passage of barges up to 3.7 meters wide from the Kleine Alster, the Admiralitätstrassenfleet (old name, today Alsterfleet) to the Elbe.

In the 18th century, the outflow of the Alster via the canals of Hamburg city center to the Elbe consisted of a transport network with 29 canals, which formed 18 waterways. Several weirs and locks already existed for this purpose in order to maintain the water level in the canals when the Elbe was draining and to protect against Elbe flooding. After the great Hamburg fire of 1842 and the two world wars, a large part of the canals in Hamburg's old town and new town was filled up with fire and war debris. After the Second World War there were only six canals left in downtown Hamburg: the Alsterfleet, Bleichenfleet, Herrengrabenfleet, Mönkedammfleet, Neuenwallfleet and Nikolaifleet.
The Alster-Elbe shipping connection was only created after the Hamburg fire of 1842 with the construction of the town hall lock on the Oberdamm in 1846, the lock chamber of which was 5.3 m wide and 25 m long. Johann Hermann Maack, who had been appointed "Construction Manager", was commissioned to plan the shipping connection. In the course of this planning, the Graskeller lock was massively rebuilt in 1838 and had a passage for ships up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. The Mühlenschleuse and Mechaelisschleuse were also built at that time.
Michaelisschleuse and Baumwallsperre

In the Bleichenfleet there was a small lock under the Ellernthorsbrücke, which was used to clean the Blechenfleet. The lock was later moved further south under the Michaelis Bridge. Today the lock is on the Herrengrabenbrücke, the transition from the Bleichenfleet to the Herrengrabenfleet, today's Michaelisschleuse (chamber lock). The Kleine Alster and the Bleichenfleet are connected at the Neuer Wall via the Neuenwallfleet, in which there was a lock that allowed smaller ships to pass through. The lock no longer exists in the Neuenwallfleet, which has a passage width of approx. 6 metres.
At the confluence of the Herrengrabenfleets with the Elbe, the Baumwallsperre was built in 1967 to protect against storm surge water levels of the Elbe, which is only opened when necessary. The canal is dewatered via the Neuenwallfleet in connection with the Kleine Alster.
According to the principle of double dyke security, the tree wall barrier has two gates one behind the other, a pair of miter gates on the Elbe side and a subsequent rotating segment gate. The passage through the barrage into the Herrengrabenfleet exists for smaller barges and barges. After an operating time of more than 45 years, a complete replacement of the technology was necessary. The mechanical engineering, hydraulic steel construction and electrical engineering of the barrier were renewed or completely renovated. The old operating room of the barrage was demolished and replaced by new rooms within the Niederhafen flood protection system. In the event of a power failure, the flood protection facilities can be powered by a stationary emergency generator. All repair work was completed in spring 2016.
