| Video Discription | Many former targets of narcissistic abuse self-diagnose themselves with narcissism, NPD. Targets do this because people who are targets of narcissistic abuse often adopt some of the narcissistic traits of their abuser. Everyone can exhibit a dysfunctional personality trait from time to time. Toxic traits can interfere with the target's ability to function in daily life. Toxic traits cause problems in relationships, at work, at school, and at home. A person with toxic traits will experience these traits as unwanted, harmful, painful, and embarrassing. During times of stress targets will display toxic behaviors, but we know it is circumstantial, because once the cause of the stress is removed/resolved, the target will no longer display the unwanted toxic traits. To meet the diagnostic requirement of a personality disorder, these traits must be exhibited consistently over long periods of time and the dysfunctional traits can be observed at different times, different places, with different people, and during a variety of life circumstance. |
