The Amaravati project is one of the most significant projects for Andhra Pradesh and its chief minister Chandrababu Naidu. So much so that a day before formally taking the oath on June 12th, Naidu had announced that Amaravati would be developed as the state's sole capital. In line with these ambitions, the state government has also put forth a timeline for project completion.
As Amaravati, the grand capital of Andhra Pradesh, has become the talk of the town, let's decode the city's master plan.
The state government recently said that Amaravati would be constructed as per the initial master plan introduced by the previous TDP government. The government also aspires to make Amaravati one of the top five capital cities in the world. Remember, the design was prepared with assistance from the Singapore government and a team of ministers and officials had also visited Singapore, China, Japan, Russia, and Malaysia to craft the most suitable design for the capital.
The Amaravati project includes state-of-the-art infrastructure, high-rise buildings, an expansive secretariat, a high-tech High Court, and theme-based districts. In the master plan, there are nine theme cities including government, finance, justice, health, sports, media, and electronics.
In terms of its geographical area, the capital city covers up to 29 villages and is being built on a 217 sq km area in the open field in the Guntur district. The city is also envisioned to be environmentally sustainable. As per the design, Amaravati is set to have 51% green space and 10% waterbody cover. Reportedly, Naidu has enquired if the capital city could only have plug points to charge electric vehicles and no fuel stations.
For navigation, there would be canals in the capital city. Not just this, Amaravati would have a 30-kilometre riverfront of the Krishna River surrounded by canals all around.
Now, coming to the project timeline, the state's municipal administration and urban development minister - Ponguru Narayana - recently said that phase 1 of the development works of the grand capital city would be completed in about 30 months or 2 and a half years.
He said that necessary infrastructure such as Assembly and Secretariat buildings, quarters for ministers, MLAs, MLCs, officials, and other staff will be completed during this first phase. The development of Amaravati will be done in three phases with a total cost of 1 lakh crore rupees.
All in all, Naidu's comeback in Andhra Pradesh is also the comeback of Amaravati as the state's sole capital and there is revived hope for the city’s long overdue development, something that was overturned by the previous YSRCP's government.
