The series consists of six episodes thirty minutes in length and will debut on Maryland Public Television in 2025 and will be distributed to other public stations around the country. It will also be available to view online. The team consists of Producer / Director Joe Ligo, Co-Producer Jimm Needle, and Writer Researcher Patrick Foster.
This is a phenomenal episode and you can really feel the passion Joe has not only for this project, but the American Motors Corporation, the stories told by former employees, their unique and edgy marketing techniques and the cars they produced. Stewart went down a rabbit hole researching AMCs and found a lot of great advertisements to discuss with Joe, and we’re able to show them all to you. They also discuss whether the 1957 AMC Hurst Rambler Rebel with a 327 cubic inch V8 was the first Muscle Car and not a Pontiac GTO!
Jeep sales exploded in the 1970s and it seems to have coincided with their marketing switching from promoting Jeeps as workhorses to a vehicle that exudes fun and adventure. They also discuss when Roger Penske and drive Marc Donohue switched to driving an AMC Javelin in 1970 and 1971 and won back to back Trans-Am Championships, taking AMC from a business that had no performance engineering or racing group, to becoming the best in a few years.
The main reason for their unique marketing was the advertising firm on Wells, Rich, Greene, who you may recognize form the TV Show Mad Men. Mary Wells Lawrence was the first female CEO of a major advertising firm and brought a new style of advertising the automobile industry and would often directly compare AMC vehicles to the competition.
If you want to learn about the history of AMC and get a new respect for their cars and marketing, you need to watch this episode and follow the Facebook page for The Last Independent Automaker so you can see the finished series when it’s released.
The documentary includes interviews with CEOs, clay modelers, assembly line workers, designers, artists, salesmen, parts managers, Mitt Romney and many more. They have downloaded thousands of pictures to use in the series and you’ll see the plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Of course you’ll see all of the great cars like a Javelin, Rambler, Pacer, J Series Jeep Trucks, the Grand Wagoneer, Marlin, Hornet, AMX, Matador, Rebel Machine, CJ, Cherokee and more.
Stewart and Steve also discuss some great new inventory including a bright yellow 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme that has become the star of Tik Tok, a 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1, a 1969 Ford Cobra, a 1952 MG TD Roadster, and a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S Fastback.
