Besides its most famous ancient site - The Great Temple of Seti I with, still quite mysterious, Osireion - there are many places thousands (!) of years older than the temple of the New Kingdom pharaoh. They date back to the period known as the Naqada III or the Early Dynastic Period. Egypt was then ruled by Narmer (Menes), Hor-Aha, Djer, or Khasekhemwy. The enclosure of Shunet El Zebib or the necropolis of the first pharaohs “Umm El Qa'ab” still hides many secrets. Naturally, my visit to Abydos wouldn’t be complete without exploration of the newly restored temple of Ramesses II, which isn’t only the first temple built by this great ancient Egyptian pharaoh, but also features some of the finest reliefs from the New Kingdom period.
