Unemployed and romantically challenged pastry chef Annie (Kristen Wiig) is determined to be the perfect maid of honour for her BFF Lillian (Maya Rudolph) —but she’s got stiff competition for bridal-party supremacy from Lillian’s wealthy future sister-in-law Helen (Rose Byrne), as well as a hefty challenge wrangling the rest of the group, including the sexually and gastronomically ravenous Megan (Melissa McCarthy). Produced by bromance impresario Judd Apatow and co-written by star and SNL MVP Wiig, Bridesmaids offers a distaff take on the boy-centric likes of The Hangover and its ilk, matching them for rudeness, crudeness, and vulgarity but bringing far more vulnerability and genuine emotional resonance to the profane proceedings. Featuring note-perfect work from the always note-perfect Wiig, and hilarious supporting turns from McCarthy, Byrne, and an uncredited Jon Hamm (as Annie’s unbelievably insensitive friend-with-benefits), Bridesmaids is “an effortless blend of bad taste and good humour with a wholly believable, often very touching emotional core, all centred around one of the finest star-making comic performances in recent memory” (Time Out London).
