Although primarily a playback singer, she has also sung several bhajans.Her maternal name is Alka Nadkarni. She is a Marathi and Hindi singer. She has also sung in s including Tamil, Odia, Nepali and Kannada etc. She made her debut in the field of singing from a Sanskrit verse in the Hindi named Abhiman. Her singing talent was recognised by the audience for the first time for the Marathi , Yashoda, released in the same year.
