SOUNDBITE (English), Stephen Ohlemacher, AP Election Decision Editor "The AP counts the vote on election night because there is no government agency that is in charge of counting votes in federal elections. Votes in this country are counted by county and in some places in New England by township, and they report those results up to the state. The AP started counting votes in U.S. elections in 1848 because it took too long to find out who the winner of a presidential election was back in those days. The AP is a news organization, and this is news. And so we started very early on reporting the news of who won elections. And that operation has grown significantly since then. And so we have this history where we've done this for a very long time, and it has grown in complexity, has grown in scope. We have thousands of people who work on election night to gather the votes from the different counties across the country in townships. You know, there are more than 4,000 counties and townships in this country. And we send thousands of people out to those places to talk to election officials and get results from them. We also get results electronically, whether scraping a website or getting a direct electronic feed from a secretary of state's office. And so our members, AP members, news organizations around the world, count on us to tell them how many votes have been counted, who's winning, and then ultimately to tell them who won. And so all these news organizations around the world rely on us to give them the news so that they can report on election night who won a race or if it takes longer than election night, in the days or even weeks after that."
