| Video Discription | A root end surgery, also known as apicoectomy, retrograde root canal treatment or root-end filling, is an endodontic surgical procedure whereby a tooth's root tip is removed and a root end cavity is prepared and filled with a biocompatible material. It is an example of a periradicular surgery. Most apicoectomies take about 30 to 90 minutes to complete. Following the procedure, you may experience some swelling and soreness in the area that was treated. An apicoectomy is a type of endodontic surgery which is typically performed when a traditional root canal fails to remove all the dead nerves and infected tissues. An apicoectomy corrects the problem by removing the apex along with the surrounding damaged tissue. Although apicoectomy is typically a safe and effective procedure, there are slight risks with any type of minor surgery. That's why apicoectomies are not recommended unless further root canal treatment won't be effective. After you procedure, it is very important to follow post-operative instructions to prevent any serious complications. Proper care of the surgical area is important to insure proper healing. If after your surgery, you are given a prescription for antibiotics, get the prescription filled as soon as possible.
