The woman's lawyer says his client is innocent. (July 14) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] Police in Brazil say that the wife of former boxing champion Aruto Gatti acted alone in the murder of her husband. However, the attorney for Amanda Rodrigues says his client is innocent and too fragile to kill the boxer. Gatti was found dead Saturday morning. Police believe he was strangled with a purse strap while he drunkenly slept. Rodrigues told investigators that she and Gatti fought Friday night and that Gatti pushed her to the ground, resulting in minor injuries. Witnesses to the incident have told police that the couple did in-fact fight and that Gatti appeared drunk. The 23-year-old Rodrigues has told authorities that she and Gatti slept on separate floors that night. She says she awoke at 6 a-m to find him dead. However, police have ruled out that Gatti committed suicide or that someone entered the apartment and killed him. NAT POP: Currently, Rodrigues is being held in jail. On Tuesday, her attorney plans to ask for her release pending the conclusion of the investigation. According to Brazilian law, police have until July 22nd to deliver their findings to the prosecutors office. Arturo Gatti once held the junior welterweight title. He is best known for his three epic fights against Mickey Ward -- that branded him one of the most exciting boxers of his generation. He retired in 2007 with a career mark of 40 and nine, with 31 knockouts. The couple does have a one-year old son. He was not hurt and currently with Rodrigues' sister.
