Ashwathama is son of dronacharya and kripi. Ashwathama took birth after dronacharya tapasya and prayers to lord Shiva for a son. After dronacharya prayers lord shiva gave him a boon by giving him a son with a natural powerful siran gem on forehead by birth. This gem is symbolic to immortality of Ashwathama. So ashwathama can live infinity years without food and water and he do not get death. Ashwathama killed Abhimanyu and his wife uttara's son by brahmastra while baby was in womb in Kurukshetrayudh to kill pandavas generation. By knowing this lord Sri Krishna cursed Ashwathama by plucking his natural powerful siran gem from his forehead and srikrishna curse is ashwathama will live life long in dwaparayug and kaliyug with the wounds and pain which occurred in Kurukshetra battle and he never get healed.
