| Video Discription | NATURALISM ART Today I'm painting a self portrait / figure study in an Australian Bush Setting! I'll be working with oil paint and in a naturalist style. Naturalism in art refers to the depiction of realistic objects in a natural setting. The Realist movement of the 19th century advocated naturalism in reaction to the stylized and idealized depictions of subjects in Romanticism, but many painters have used a similar approach over the centuries. One example of Naturalism is the artwork of American artist William Bliss Baker, whose landscape paintings are considered some of the best examples of the naturalist movement. Another example is the French Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-84), from the Barbizon School, with his paintings of people, or figures in their natural settings. Bastien-Lepage had a very strong influence on the young Australian Artist Tom Roberts (1856-1931), whilst studying abroad in England and Europe. Roberts, who is considered "The Farther of Australian Art", brought these new ideas back with him to Australia and went out painting with his artist friends in the bush, working direct from nature (Plein Air). Roberts told his colleagues to paint what they saw and to be particularly attentive to the representation of tonal values. This was Australian impressionism - later to be known as The Heidelberg School - in its early days.
