| Video Discription | Reading a science text can be difficult. Sometimes words that are important to reading cannot be defined by using context clues. When you come across a difficult word try and identify prefixes and suffixes. Removing these add ons found at the start and end of a word will leave you with a root word. A root word is the simplest form of a word. The root word in autotrophs is troph. Troph is defined as an organism that gets nourishment from a source or to feed. Now that we know the meaning of the root word we can try to figure out the meaning of the complex word. Try to think of other words that start with auto. Autofocus. My iPhone has an autofocus feature which means it will focus by itself. Automatic. My car has an automatic transition that means it shifts gears by itself. Autograph. That's a signature by oneself. The prefix auto means self. As a result our complex word means self feeding. An example of a self feeding organism is a plant. Producers like plants use the suns energy and the process of photosynthesis to make their own food. A heterotroph is another complex word that contains the root troph. The prefix hetero can be found in the word hetero chromatic. Chromatic means color and something hetero chromatic has many other colors. Hetero cellular. This word used in biology means composed of different types of cells. Heterogenous. This word can be used to describe a mixture of different materials. A pizza is heterogenous mixture because it's made of different ingredients. The prefix hetero means different. As a result the complex word heterotroph means other Feeding. Heterotrophs are animals because they consume other organisms or they get energy from different sources. So the next time your are reading a dense text and cannot find the meaning of a word from context try to break the word down into its root word. |
