Following Banana Girl: Weight Gain on High-Carb After Calorie Deficit
In this video, I recount my transition to a high-carb, low-fat plant-based vegan diet, called Raw Till 4, influenced by Freely the Banana Girl.
I embraced this lifestyle in 2014 after struggling with restrictive eating habits and a slowed metabolism. Initially, this diet led to significant weight gain (almost 25 kg), primarily from consuming large amounts of carbohydrates such as fruits (smoothies and juices too, sometimes with added sugar), potatoes, grains, pasta, bread, cookies, and other floury foods. However, despite the weight gain, I experienced a profound freedom from food cravings, particularly for animal products and sugary treats, which had been a constant challenge in my past.
By 2020, after years of being overweight, I discovered the key aspect of my diet that I had been missing—understanding calorie density and the importance of eating whole foods without added sugars or refined ingredients. This realization led me to adjust my eating habits significantly. I shifted towards consuming foods in their whole form, ditching all the flour, sugar, smoothies, juices, oil, and other high-fat whole foods such as olives, avocados, nuts, and seeds, and focusing on satiety through natural high-carb fiber-rich foods. This approach allowed me to finally lose weight sustainably without rigorous exercise, relying instead on light activities like walking and simple exercises such as push-ups and squats.
Throughout this process, I learned the critical importance of not just what macro to eat, but how to eat it —prioritizing whole, unrefined foods that could fill me up and keep me satisfied without excessive calorie intake. This shift not only helped me achieve and maintain a healthier weight but also improved my overall well-being and relationship with food.
A high-carb, low-fat, whole foods plant-based vegan diet with enough calorie intake - at least 2500 calories for women and at least 3000 calories for men - is one of the most sustainable ways to go and stay vegan. This diet not only allowed me to eat abundantly without feeling deprived but also helped me stay lean and healthy without the use of appetite suppressants like coffee or engaging in excessive exercise. I focus on eating foods like bananas, potatoes, and rice, which provide satisfying bulk without excessive calories, aligning with our body's natural preference for carbohydrates for energy.
