Seeking Justice and Reforms to Stop Hazing in the Military
Birthday Salute to Pvt. Danny Chen on May 24th
A delegation of Asian Americans left today by bus from New York City to D.C. to hand-deliver 9,026 birthday cards for Private Danny Chen to Members of Congress. Private Danny Chen, a soldier who died in Afghanistan after being subjected to excessive physical and emotional mistreatment - including racial taunting and humiliation- would have turned 20 on Memorial Day Weekend.
"We're going to D.C. to remind Congress about Danny and to convey the birthday wishes from around the world. We will not forget Danny and the need for military reforms to ensure these senseless tragedies never occur again to anyone," stated Liz OuYang, OCA-NY President. Banny Chen, Danny's cousin; OCA-NY President Liz OuYang, board member Esther Min Choi, interns Mackenzie Yang and Julia Chung; Vietnam Veteran Thomas Lee, Baruch College Undergraduate Student Exec. Secretary Ivy Tang, and documentary filmmaker Mansee Kong are on the bus. This one month b-day card campaign generated cards from twenty-five states and nine countries including Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Croatia, Turkey, Hungary, Switzerland, Spain, and Canada. We received cards from former Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, filmmaker Spike Lee, and several elected officials.
In D.C., the New York delegation will be met by representatives from OCA-National, Asian American Justice Center, and Japanese American Citizens League. Together, we will visit the offices of Senators Carl Levin and McCain, chairs of the Senate Armed Services Committee and Representatives Smith and McKeon, chairs of the House Armed Services Committee to deliver the birthday cards and to show our support for U.S. Congresswomen Velazquez's, Chu's, and Gillibrand's anti-hazing legislation. Congresswoman Velazquez's bill, Service Member Anti-Hazing Act," H..R. 5638 was passed by the House earlier this week. Their collective legislation calls for defining hazing; tracking, reporting, and responding to incidents; and expedited transfers.
