| Video Discription | Trading as Fridged Freight, brothers John & Ben Wyatt from Diss were pioneers in refrigerated road transport. At first they used dry-ice packed onto foodstuff in demountable insulated containers. Having seen trailers in America with their own built-in fridge units the brothers copied the idea themselves. This is now commonplace, but the Wyatts were the first in Europe to do so. Taken in the very late sixties, this silent cine footage shows John & Robert Bensley moving a chassis they fabricated around Wyatt’s yard with a crane. This would be prior to fitting the axels, brakes and fifth-wheel coupling. Once rolling it would be dragged to Norwich Coach Works for the fitting of the bodywork. Upon its return John & Robert would fit the fridge unit powered by a Lister stationary engine. The second section shows a finished trailer on a very short road test. If you have ever wondered why the road surface at the junction of the A1066 and the Stuston Road was so bad, watch this and you will know! |
