| Video Discription | HIGH BILIRUBIN. CAUSES EXPLAINED. COJUGATED BILIRUBIN. Problems in the gallbladder and bile ducts. Bilirubin is an orange- yellowish pigment that is made during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. Red blood cells live in the blood before they get destroyed for about 120 days . after that they get destroyed in the spleen and heme or haem is formed. Bilirubin is then bound to albumin in the circulation and carried to the liver, where it is taken up by the hepatocytes. In hepatic microsomes, bilirubin is conjugated with glucuronic acid via the enzyme UDP glucuronyl transferase. (Phase 2 of detoxification in the liver) Conjugated bilirubin is water soluble, and a portion of it is excreted in the urine (this is why urine is yellow). The remainder of the conjugated bilirubin is secreted into bile and then, via bile, into the small intestine.
