German lawmakers have approved a support package for the country’s five Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime-surveillance aircraft ordered last year for $1.1 billion, as defense officials ponder if more of the planes will be needed. The P-8A Poseidon is a modified Boeing 737-800ERX, bringing together a highly reliable airframe and high-bypass turbo fan jet engine with a fully connected, state-of-the-art open architecture mission system. The P-8A Poseidon,the maritime patrol aircraft, is capable of broad-area, maritime and littoral operations, and is also search and rescue. The P-8A Poseidon will improve German’s capability to defend its northern and maritime borders while ensuring interoperability with NORAD and NATO allies.
