► On the occasion of "World Brain Tumor Day 2022’’ Dr. Amit Srivastava, Director of Neurosurgery department, Aakash Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital is talking about brain tumor: its symptoms, causes & treatment.
►There are two types of brain tumors- cancerous and non-cancerous. Please remember that 40- 50 % of brain tumors are cancerous and 50-60 % are non-cancerous. If you experience symptoms like headache, nausea, restlessness, sleeplessness, seizures, and weakness in the leg or hand on one side of the body, or even if you have problems like loss of hearing, drooping of the face, you should consult your family physician, get the CT and MRI done and then consult a neurologist or neurosurgeon to know the exact cause of the problem.
►Please remember, the sooner you detect the problem and consult the doctor, the more it is possible to treat. Neurosurgery has become very advanced today. Removing the tumour with the help of neuronavigation technology, endoscope, and the microscope has become very easy today. The tumors can be removed by making tiny incisions. Most tumors can be removed by making an incision of one- or two-rupee coin sizes. It is possible even if the tumour is of cricket ball size.
►You should consult the right surgeon and take at least 2-3 opinions if the problem is detected. You should not panic even if the tumour is cancerous. Radiation, chemotherapy, and re-surgery are possible even if the tumour reoccurs. You should take things scientifically, do not take them negatively in your life, and always look for the treatment possibilities.
►Thinking that nothing can be done or that life has become useless due to a tumour is not right. Please remember if it is diagnosed on time and if you get proper treatment, you can live a long life. Life is normal if the tumour is benign or non-cancerous. You can come to me if you want to meet tumour-operated patients who are into all kinds of professions. They are engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, footballers, martial art specialists, and physiotherapists. You will find many such patients who are leading their life normally; they just need to have regular follow-up consultations.
