| Video Discription | One of the most common injuries in all of combat sports is the broken hand. Our hands (among other things) are our weapons and are subjected to a lot of different forces. Those forces can break bones. When a hand is broken in this context it is often a broken metacarpal bone. There are five metacarpals in each hand and they are crucial to the proper function of the hand. This video will be introducing you to the hand (and how amazing it is), but also go into the details of the metacarpal bones, how they are injured, and a little about how hand surgeons fix them. Metacarpal fractures can be significant injuries that, if not treated correctly, can result in loss of function to the hand. Fortunately, many metacarpal fractures such as “Boxer’s Fractures” can be treated without surgery. Combat sports cause compression, twisting, and bending forces on the metacarpals.
