While they were passing a village, they saw a lake. As Buddha was thirsty, he told his younger disciple to get some water from the lake. The disciple obliged. When he reached the lake, he noticed that some people were washing their clothes in it, and right at that moment, a bullock cart was going through the lake. As a result, the water became muddy. The disciple thought, “I cannot take this water to Buddha.” He came back to Buddha and told him that the water was dirty. Buddha told everyone to sit down and take some rest. One hour later, Buddha asked the same disciple to get water from the same lake. The disciple got confused, but he said nothing and went up to the lake. He could not believe what he saw. He noticed that the water was crystal clear. He collected some water in a pot he was carrying and took it to Buddha. Buddha looked at the water and smiled. He asked the disciple, “This water looks pure, but you told me before that it was not fit to drink. Did you do something to make it clean?” The disciple was perplexing. He did not understand the question and told Buddha that the water was muddy before, and after that, it was clean. Buddha said, “You did nothing to make the water clean. You let it be. The mud settled down itself, and you got clean water.” Buddha continued, “Our mind is exactly like that. When it is disturbed, let it be. Give it some time. It will calm down on its own. We don’t have to put in any extra effort.
