Hello viewers, welcome to another episode from Walk Africa Fun Facts YouTube Channel. Today’s issue is centered on Gitegha, the capital city of Burundi, and of course the newest capital city in Africa.
Gitegha is the political capital city of Burundi, a status taken from Bujumbura, a city 62 Kilometers to the west. Ghitega was the headquarters of the Kingdom of Burundi , which existed from the 18th century AD to the time it was abolished in 1966. Germans first occupied the present day Ghitega in 1912.
The late Burundian President, His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza promised to reinstate Ghitega political status in 2007, and the parliament voted in favor of the move in 2019. Here at 10 main highlights about Ghitega. Remember to Subscribe to the Channel for more interesting topics that form the core of Africa.
#1. Ghitega served as the headquarters of the Kings of Burundi (Mwamih) until 1966 when the Kingdom of Burundi was abolished, making her lose mainstream political significance.
#2. Ghitega borders Lake Tanganyika to the west, the 2nd deepest freshwater lake in the world after Baikar of Siberia.
#3. Did you know that the last King of the Kingdom of Burundi, Mwamih Nta’reh (5) was killed in this city in 1972.
#4. Most Ghitega dwellers are Christian, though there at a few Muslim Mosques.
#5. The only airport in Ghitega, Ghitega Airport, used to link Ghitega by air, but it is now defunct.
#6. A notable education institution in this city is the Polytechnic University of Ghitega which was founded in 2014.
#7. Ghitega is home to Burundi’s National Museum of Ghitega. Found here is the Royal Court and several Karyenda Drum Sanctuaries.
#8. The city surface area is about 22km² while the metropolitan area extends to 27km².
#9. Ghitega estimated population as of 2020 was about 130,000 people as of 2020, with a density of about 5 people per km².
#10. Lastly, did you know that Ghitega was formerly known as Kitega? Now you know.
Critics have argued that Ghitega is not ready to take a capital city’s standing, arguing that the move to relocate the capital city status from Bujumbura had a symbolic and political view, given that the economic capital of Bujumbura was becoming an opposition’s stronghold. It was, supposedly, a move to escape the dissident, and deflecting attention from the dire economic crisis as was cited by additional sources.
The sitting president of Burundi, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiyeh addressed the United Nation’s General Assembly in its 76th Session, citing that with peace restored, poverty was still a threat. He however reiterated that the challenge was being addressed by the adoption of the National Development Plan of Burundi.
He called this initiative an ambitious and transformative program that can accelerate the process of social economic development. There is hope for this country, and I suppose it will be the joy of all of us seeing skyscrapers in Ghitega Someday. However, more multi-sectorial involvement and goodwill is needed for the realization of this dream.
