"Hello everybody, I'm Jad Attal, senior design expert with Rago Arts and Auction Center. Today I'd like to speak with you about Carlo Bugatti's design career. Carlo Bugatti was an Italian furniture designer during the Art Nouveau era. His eclectic striking designs are immediately recognizable. Bugatti studied at the Brera Academy in Milan and at The Academy of Beaux Arts in Paris. Carlo turned to North Africa, Islamic Design, and Japan for inspiration. Bugatti's work is often asymmetric with abstract elements representative of the natural world. His use of mixed textures, reinforces the sense of dynamic tension created by the lack of symmetry. In an industrial era, his furniture was made of ebonized wood, inlaid with copper, brass, bone, mother of pear, pewter, and covered with decorative velvet. Carlo's melding of ethnic design styles was novel in the 1900's this displaced practical considerations and made his pieces more personal. In my opinion, his genius is evident in the balancing of warm and familiar materials with bold yet recognizable design motifs. Carlo was a jeweler, a maker of musical instruments, and a painter, but he was ultimately thought of as a sculptor. Carlo's style, exotic, decorative, and odd set him apart from every trend and vogue in the early 1900's. His designs gained increasing popularity until their triumph at [inaudible 00:01:30] 1902 expo. Bugatti enjoyed much acclaimed during his lifetime. Though by the time of his death in 1940, he was no longer in style. His sons were ultimately more famous than their father.
