A total of seven tons of marijuana and more than a ton of cocaine were recovered during an investigation of the 3-foot-wide drug tunnel, which was fitted with lights and a ventilation system. The tunnel zig-zagged across the border from a home in Tijuana to a commercial lot in San Diego for approximately 874 yards, or the length of more than seven American football fields, reported ABC News. According to a statement by Laura Duffy, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California, at the Mexico side entrance of the tunnel was an elevator that could hold between eight or 10 people. The elevator was located in the closet of the Tijuana home, reported the San Diego Union-Tribune. Investigations first began in 2015 when U.S. Border Patrol agents became suspicious of heavy traffic near a lot selling wooden pallets in San Diego. In mid-April, agents stopped a truck leaving the lot and confiscated thousands of pounds of cocaine and marijuana. The seizure led to an investigation of the lot itself and authorities then discovered the other entrance to the border tunnel under a large dumpster.
