For once, the Maranello team was blessed with good weather, allowing them to complete an intensive comparative work program between the two cars. Charles Leclerc ran the more updated version of the SF24, while Carlos Sainz drove with the pre-Barcelona aerodynamic configuration. The current situation is particularly delicate for Ferrari, as they urgently need to find solutions to the problems that have emerged. This urgency necessitates sacrificing some free practice sessions to gather essential track data. Although the lap programs for Leclerc and Sainz were not identical, careful comparison of the data collected allows for drawing some conclusions, as certain trends are noticeable even without detailed sensor data. Notably, even from simple onboard footage, some differences were visibly apparent. Aerodynamic bouncing was significantly present on Leclerc's car and almost absent on Sainz's. In corners with a constant radius, the bouncing is less impactful, but in the central sector, the difference in behavior is stark. The rear end of Leclerc's car becomes unstable in the middle of curves, precisely where the bouncing is most pronounced. This suggests that the Maranello engineers were unable to predict or simulate this phenomenon accurately due to a strong dynamic component of the car that triggers it. The bumps in Barcelona and undulations in Austria acted as catalysts for the bouncing, whereas the smooth asphalt at Silverstone mitigates it, until the central sector where the transitions through Copse, Maggots, Becketts, and Chapel challenge the system. The data confirms these observations. By comparing the best lap times on hard tires from both drivers, certain conclusions can be drawn. Examining the telemetry data from the first free practice session, it is clear that the two drivers used significantly different Power Unit mappings. Carlos Sainz was able to push the engine almost to its maximum, likely to gather data under extreme conditions. This is evident from the first braking at turn 3 and throughout the exit of turn 5 onto the straight towards Brooklands and Luffield. In turn 7, it is noticeable that at medium-low speeds, in a long corner with a constant lateral load, Leclerc's updated SF24 generates more aerodynamic load than Sainz's car, confirming Ferrari's claims before the Spanish Grand Prix that the new package increases load at medium-low speeds.
