His late parent's home has become an office of sorts. The home's prime location, in the shadow of the Revel casino, is why the state is now trying to seize the property in hopes of developing the area into a bustling tourist district. "I want to be part of it, and because of where I am I can't understand why the bustle should start here, it should've started there. (points to Revel)" - Charlie Birnbaum, property owner. Opened in 2012, Revel was supposed to breathe new life to the city's sputtering economy, but instead the Revel along with two other casinos are set to close in September. Still, New Jersey's Casino Reinvestment Development Authority thinks Birnbaum's property and other around it are vital to redevelopment. The two sides are now in court to decide if the state has the right to force Birnbaum to sell. "Now is the time given some of the closing to develop the non-gambling revenue, to have those sorts of developments and to amass developable properties so that developers can come in and do that." - Stuart Lederman, lawyer for CRDA. Birnbaum insists his reluctance to sell isn't about money� it's about history. His parents found sanctuary in the house, and not even the 1998 murder of his mother in the home shook his belief that the building is special. "The building has been my refuge in a seminal way." - Charlie Birnbaum, property owner. Despite everything, Birnbaum says he understands Atlantic City needs help and if given a concrete plan for would happen to his property he said would consider selling.
