| Video Discription | Shanhaiguan has a long history of more than 600 years and held a very important military position in ancient times. In 1381, General Xu Da of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) led the construction of the Shanhaiguan Great Wall defenses. Shan(山) means 'mountain' and hai(海) means 'sea', and Guan(關)means 'the ancient city of Shanhaiguan Pass'. Shanhai Pass got its name due to its position between mountains and the sea. Shanhaiguan Great Wall stretched 26 kilometers (16 miles) long, closing the 10-kilometer gap between the mountains of Jiaoshan and the sea at "Old Dragon Head". The Laolongtou (Old Dragon Head) 老龍頭 The Laolongtou Great Wall is one of part the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Great Wall. Lying five kilometers south of Shanhaiguan Pass, It extends about 20 meters into the Bohai Sea like a dragon drinking water, hence its name. JiaoshanGreat Wall 角山長城 The Jiaoshan Great Wall was constructed in 1381 (the 14th year of the Hongwureign in the Ming Dynasty). Stretching from the Old Dragon's Head in the east and having passed through the ancient city of Shanhaiguan Pass, the Great Wall crosses the Jiaoshan Mountain, the first mountain along its path, and then extends northwards, hence the reputation as “the First Mountain of the Great Wall". First Pass under Heaven 天下第一關 The eastern wall was the major defense line of the pass. The well-known 'First Pass under Heaven' (Zhendong Tower) is located on this side. It has 68 small windows on the east, north, and south sides for soldiers to shoot arrows from. The tower is 45 feet (13.7 meters) high with two floors. There is a big board hanging under the eaves with five huge Chinese characters 'Tian Xia Di Yi Guan' (the First Pass under Heaven) inscribed in the Ming Dynasty. The four corners of the eaves are decorated with vivid sculptures of beasts.
