A short but sweet stop in the capital city Harare where we caught up with old friends before continuing our journey northwards to Chirundu.

Big thanks to Benjamin Mavros and Justine De La Rue for hosting us for an amazing dinner at their house in Harare. They have a very unique collection of pets including a rescued baby Zebra and a duck that thinks its a dog! The jewelry shown at the beginning of the video is from the very talented Patrick Mavros https://www.patrickmavros.com. His jewelry is sold all over the world and some of his clients include celebrities and royals such as Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.
Huge thanks to Valerie Caldecott who hosted our group during our stay in Harare and to the Mountain Club of Zimbabwe for taking us rock climbing.
On our way to Chirundu we stopped at the famous Chinoyi Caves with their bright turquoise water. The caves are very popular with local divers and apparently the bottom of the caves has yet to be discovered.
The distance between Harare and Chirundu is approximately 360 kilometres. As seen in the video, we were stopped multiple times by police searching for anything to fine us for. There is a comprehensive list of items that must be carried in vehicles in Zimbabwe including fire extinguishers and safety vests. The police officers are notoriously corrupt and have recently become very aggressive. Make sure you have everything required so that they have no means to fine you - although they will most likely make something up! This stretch of road is incredibly dangerous given the large number of trucks travelling to and from the border with Zambia.
Chirundu is a small border town located along the Zambezi River just before the bridge over to Zambia. Apparently, Chirundu has one of the highest concentrations of HIV in the world. Luckily we stayed at a friends fishing lodge out of town and along the Zambezi River. Big thanks to the MacMillan family for having us and to the "Foot Soldiers" for making this one of the highlights of our 5 week tour across Southern Africa.
During our time in Chirundu we spent our days travelling up river by boat and finding sandbanks where we would play games and cook lunch. The water is heavily populated with hippo's and crocodiles... We do not recommend swimming in these waters!
As seen towards the end of the video, we were very close to a pod of hippos while we sunbathed in ankle high water and took refuge during a storm.
This is one of my (Scuba) personal favourite places in the world. Catching a Tiger Fish is an exhilarating experience and worth every hour spent in the sun drifting down the river.
