The deal was negotiated quickly after the Golden State Warriors waived him on the day his $30 million salary for the 2024-25 season was set to guarantee. At 39, Paul will spend his 20th NBA season in San Antonio, teaming up with coach Gregg Popovich and 20-year-old star center Victor Wembanyama. Paul, a 12-time All-Star, played 58 games with the Warriors last season, averaging 9.2 points and 6.8 assists in 26.4 minutes, and starting only 18 games. He is third all-time in the NBA in assists with 11,894. The Spurs, who needed a point guard, experimented with different players last year and also drafted Stephon Castle with the No. 4 pick, who has expressed interest in playing point guard.
