| Video Discription | (21 Dec 2019) Hundreds of Indian students and professors from New Delhi's Jamia University demonstrated against a controversial citizenship law and citizen registry on Saturday. Students waved Indian national flags and chanted slogans against the current Narendra Modi-led government for passing the Citizenship Amendment Act, which critics say discriminates against Muslims. The law allows Hindus, Christians and other religious minorities who are in India illegally to become citizens if they can show they were persecuted because of their religion in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It does not apply to Muslims. Protesters also rallied against a controversial citizenship list, the National Register of Citizens (NRC), that was applied in the state of Assam, which the central government now wants to impose nationwide. Critics decried the NRC in Assam as a naked attempt to deport millions of minority Muslims.
