Stay tuned because I'm going to show you one of the cheapest and safest ways to buy Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum. When I was looking to buy Bitcoin for the first time, it seemed like everywhere had crazy high fees. Coinbase, Square Cash App, Paypal, Gemini. All of these well known platforms allow you to invest in bitcoin, but charge fees ranging from 1.5% to 4% every time you buy or sell cryptocurrency. That’s AT LEAST 15 dollars lost for every thousand dollars worth of bitcoin traded which is insane. And you pay that fee every time you buy OR sell so the amount you pay in fees over time can add up to a significant amount. I know Robinhood says they have free crypto trading, but it’s really not free when you read the fine print and you don’t actually own any bitcoin when investing through Robinhood. So I liked the idea of using Coinbase here in the US because of their industry leading security and high liquidity, but there was no way I was going to settle for paying a 1.5% trading fee. So I did some research and there's actually a super easy and secure trick to buying and selling bitcoin with much lower fees within a Coinbase exchange. Coinbase’s standard platform has such high fees because they act as a digital currency BROKER, meaning that they go out and buy or sell bitcoin for you after you tell them how much you want. The way to get around this broker fee is to use a secure digital currency exchange that doesn’t involve a broker. It isn’t obvious to people who are new to crypto, but Coinbase also runs an exchange called Coinbase PRO that circumvents the need for a broker. As the PRO in the name suggests, it’s marketed towards more experienced traders, but please don’t be intimidated by its flashy user interface because it's really not any harder to use than the regular Coinbase platform. In this next part of the video I’m going to walk you through how to take advantage of lower fees by buying bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies like Etherium through Coinbase Pro.
While it’s always recommended that you store the keys to your coins offline in cold storage, if you decide to keep bitcoin in your US coinbase wallet temporarily, the coins are insured up to $250,000 by the FDIC – whether you’re on Coinbase or Coinbase Pro.
There are definitely a couple other exchanges that are worth a look if you’re searching for the absolute lowest trading fees. Binance is a large reputable digital currency exchange that currently offers 0.1% trading fees, but it isn’t available in all states. Kraken is another secure exchange with trading fees that average around 0.2%, but it doesn’t offer the instant buying power that Coinbase pro offers. However Kraken does let you trade crypto on margin if you are looking to increase your risk reward potential.
