In this short video, Brian Nash, a college financial aid consultant gives parents five tips on things they should be doing right now if their child is in their junior year of high school.
The tips include visiting college campuses, prepping for the ACT and SAT tests, looking for private scholarships and more. With these tips, parents will be on the fast track to helping their child get into the college of his or her dreams.
If your child is a junior in high school, the time to start planning for college is running out. If your child is younger, you're in a better position. This doesn't mean having your son or daughter start flipping through college guides. It means visiting campuses, repositioning your assets to maximize financial qualification and so much more.
Hello, I'm Brian Nash, owner of Nash College Planning Strategies and author of How to Beat the High Cost of College. Since 1984 I've spent my life studying the ins and outs of financial planning and helping parents save the most money possible on their child's college tuition. In this short video I'm going to tell you five things you should be doing right now if your child is a junior in high school or younger.
Tip One: Start visiting college campuses
By the end of your child's junior year in high school they should already be narrowing down their list of schools. An important step in this process is to actually visit the campuses so your child can get a sense of the town, the students and the academic rigor of the institution.
Tip Two: Start prepping for the ACT or SAT
It's never too early to start prepping for the ACT or SAT. Your child's ACT and SAT scores could make the difference in whether or not they get accepted into the top schools of their choice. A high ACT or SAT score can also make your child a more desirable student and incentivize schools to offer a better financial aid package. If you're willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars a year to send your child to school, it's worth spending money on a good ACT or SAT prep course, class or tutor. In this highly competitive time, every extra test point counts.
Tip Three: Start Looking Into Private Scholarships
I'm not a big believer in wasting a whole lot of time searching for private scholarships since they only make up about 3.1% of all the funds available for a college education. But just like the lottery, "You have to get in it to win it!"
It's a good idea to encourage your child to look into all the available scholarships that they qualify for. This may include local scholarships; scholarships related to a sport or hobby your child participates in, ethnic scholarships and even scholarships connected to their college of choice.
Tip Four: Start preparing your finances immediately
There are specific formulas that will be used to determine the minimum amount of money you will be expected to pay for your child's college no matter which school they choose. It's important to realize that there are things that you can be doing right now to position your money so that you qualify for the most financial aid possible.
Tip Five: Don't procrastinate
It can be so easy to push off difficult decisions; campus visits and SAT study sessions until your child's senior year. Don't fall into this trap! The more prepared you are, the more control you'll have over the college financial aid process.
Think about how good it will feel to get everything wrapped up early. Not only will it be a huge weight off your shoulders, but you'll probably be able to get thousands of dollars more in financial aid.
Thanks for watching this video. I hope you're anxious and ready to start working through the tips I've just shared. I've got even more great tips in my free eBook How to Beat the High Cost of College available for free at http://www.NashCollegePlanning.com
My goal is to make college financially possible for every family. |
