| Video Discription | University of Calgary professor Geroge F. Jergeas spoke to members of the Canadian Construction Association at the group’s recent annual conference in San Antonio, Texas. Jergeas focused on the Alberta olisands, and said there is a tendency to blame losses in productivity on workers, but in fact other factors such as poor planning or lack of interaction between stakeholders is often to blame. Jergeas said “silo” management, where a project goes through several phases, with a “decision gate” at each phase. He said the gated process can hamper productivity, particularly at the mega-project level. Jergeas also said that while technology should enhance productivity, it has in fact done the opposite. Technology is a tool, he said, but it cannot replace leadership or teamwork, and recommended emphasizing the “soft side” of construction management. JOC DIGITAL MEDIA |
