This little girl gets excited as she realises that the 'connected phonation' strategy that we are teaching her (blending) is helping her read the words instantly. Here's what to look for: 👌The girl is saying all the sounds and then decoding the words (great start!) 👌She has been pre exposed to the blending strategy but in this video she naturally does it on one of the words. Yay! Look at her go! 👌The educator notices it and feeds this back to her, explicitly explaining the reading behaviour that needs to be reinforced. 👌The girl has another go at that blending strategy with success! (teacher being the guide on the side) and then they proceed to use this strategy for the rest of the words. Notice the finger movements of the educator, its sliding not tapping. This is a nonverbal cue for the blending process. Connected phonation is a decoding, or word reading, strategy that teaches students to stretch out continuous sounds to support their blending. This practice is also referred to as continuous blending. If you have students that sound out every word in a stop-start way, this strategy is extremely useful to help students build automaticity in decoding. |
