Cole “Neighbors” Clyde’s Prime Rib on NE Sandy is a relic of overt anti-black consumption, policy, and violence within the urban center of Portland. Built as a local branch of the regional Coon Chicken Inn restaurant franchise, patrons entered the facility through the mouth of a large painted head of a caricature of African descent. Opened in 1930, the restaurant leased to other owners in the 1950’s when racialized language was no longer fashionable/profitable. The texts (song lyrics, prose excerpt, landscape) demonstrate how the meaning (or identity) of the self is constructed by the people around us: the society, the individuals, the atmosphere. For Fanon and J. Cole, the atmosphere of meaning that they perform (black masculinity) is constructed by whiteness. Or, put differently, the landscape performs whiteness and the meaning that a black body holds must improvise against this score. |
