Vass When the Christian life and the idea of separation from the world was taken more seriously, all evangelical churches (and even many that were not evangelical) believed and taught that professing Christians should abstain from worldly amusements. The first pamphlet contained in this book was written during the moral decline that followed the devastating “civil” war between the Northern and Southern states. Upon reading this small treatise, Robert L. Dabney, commented, “The picture of the Primitive Christian life is very engaging and just. I wish we had such a standard of morals among our church-members now.” Vass’ small work shows the depth and strength of primitive piety. He also discusses the principles which motived those early Christians. Living, as we do, in a society that rivals pagan Rome for its wickedness and debauchery, there is much worthy of close attention. The second small work included, by Samuel Miller, takes aim at one particular amusement that has too often found toleration amongst professing Christians, theater attendance. As Miller shows, it amounts to a waste of time, a dissipation of the mind and the support of all kinds of attendant evils. He lays open many of its evils and shows that it is inconsistent with the Christian profession to patronize the theater. Yet, how many professing Christians today invite a more polluting flood into their homes through the television set (or video games)? Perhaps, never has a society been so saturated with the moral infection of amusement media as the one in which live. How many people today waste countless hours watching television, movies, playing video games, or just simply engaging in the vanity of mindless social media? Have these things advanced our spiritual lives or strengthened the character of the modern church? Miller’s warning, though containing some dated references, still merits careful consideration.
