| Video Discription | The Vow by James R. Willson What is the relationship between covenanting, or vowing, and the reception of the Lord’s supper? Today, it is to be feared that few people take seriously the nature of the oath and vow implied in the sacramental reception of the Lord’s supper. The practice of close communion is rarely enforced in Reformed churches and, with its abandonment, the enforcing of terms of communion is all but non-existent. The Lord’s supper has become for most people, if they have any religious affections, an emotional time of undefined pietistic introspection. It was not always so. There was a time when concern for true piety was not divorced from terms of communion; when communion in the supper represented a broader consensus of belief and practice; when a sacrament really was a sacramentum—an oath or a vow rendered to God. In his sermon on the vow, J.R. Willson examines the doctrine of oaths and vows. Drawing heavily on the theme of covenant renewal in sacramental observance, he applies a general duty to the oath of sacramental fellowship. This leads to a discussion of covenanting together with many topics raised by this doctrine. Willson discusses the extent of our sacramental vow and engages in defense of the descending obligation of vows and covenants. He raises the prospect of the temptation to violate this engagement and adds to this remarks on the propriety of terms of communion. All of this is taken up as entailed by the duty of keeping our covenant and professing of faith in the sacrament. This is a work that illustrates the practice of covenant keeping with a plainness and directness that characterizes all of Willson’s writings. It will challenge all communicants in the every corner of the church of God, if they prayerfully consider this sermon on the vow. To this sermon has been added a later lecture in defense of the Solemn League and its applicability to the United States.
