| Video Discription | Gordon Smiley was an American race car driver who tragically lost his life in a single-car crash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 15, 1982. He was attempting to qualify for his third Indianapolis 500 as part of the Fletcher Racing Team. That year, the speedway was witnessing record-breaking speeds during the qualification runs, with drivers like Kevin Cogan and Rick Mears setting new lap records. Smiley's accident occurred during one of the warm-up laps. As he was rounding the third turn, his car began to oversteer, which is a condition where the rear wheels lose grip before the front wheels, causing the car to slide. In an attempt to correct this slide, Smiley steered right, which caused the front wheels to suddenly regain traction. This action sent his car shooting across the track and into the wall at nearly 200 mph. The force of the collision was devastating. The March chassis of his car shattered upon impact, disintegrating into pieces. The fuel tank exploded, igniting a fire and sending debris, including Smiley's exposed body, into the catch fence. The wreckage then tumbled across the short-chute connecting turns 3 and 4 of the track.
