Day 3: West Indies the happier side to finish the day in a much better position with 351/5 on the board. The deficit only 65 runs from England's first innings total of 416. Windies resumed from 212/3 after tea with both Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge striking the ball well in their 175-run mammoth partnership. Ben Stokes got the breakthrough dismissing Athanaze for a well notched 82 in the 62nd over. Jason Holder joining Hodge at the crease.
Struggled throughout to get bat on ball and is unbeaten at stumps with 23 in 67 balls. Hodge continued scoring at a good pace and moved to three figures for the first time in Tests. He was trapped in front by Chris Woakes Hodge having taken DRS was disappointed as the umpire's call was upheld ball clipping the top of middle stump. He finished with 120 in 171 balls 19 fours in the knock. Joshua Da Silva scored a quickfire 32 in 35 balls and will join former skipper.
Holder on the crease tomorrow morning. The English bowlers toiled hard for wickets throughout the day but could get only half of the Windies side back in the hut. Mark Wood suffered from a hamstring niggle and left the field in the evening session. Shoaib Bashir (2/100) is the pick of the lot so far with Chris Woakes (1/59) Gus Atkinson (1/77) and Ben Stokes (1/61) the other wicket takers. The second new ball was taken in the final over of the day's play and it will be interesting how it works for the English bowlers in the morning conditions tomorrow on the moving day of the Test match.
Day 2: So England went at nearly 5 runs an over yesterday to amass 416 runs in their first innings thanks largely Pope century and Ben Duckett’s 71. West Indies were sloppy in field letting down a few catches along with plenty misfields to egg on England’s scoring rate. So the home team’s batters have done their job over to the bowlers now. West Indies were tepid in the first Test with bat and skipper Kraigg Brathwaite called for greater grit and application players.
James Anderson has retired the baton has been passed and it's time for England's new breed of pacers to take the legacy forward. Gus Atkinson provided glimpses of that at Lord's picking up a 12-wicket haul in his debut match and England will be hoping for more of that as they move to Nottingham looking for another clinical show to seal the three-Test series against West Indies. For the visiting side who are a young team with plenty of talented players.
it's about displaying their skills and showing the requisite patience in the Test arena as they will be keen to put behind the innings loss and take inspiration from the Gabba turnaround earlier this year in their bid to level the series. Although Anderson has retired there isn't a shortage of experience in the pace attack with the presence of Chris Woakes and the addition of Mark Wood to the squad. With Ben Stokes also proving his bowling fitness in the previous game.
A brilliant fightback from West Indies today and they have reduced the lead to 65 runs! The West Indies' openers Brathwaite and Louis got off to a steady start on a flat surface. But a nippy spell from Wood unsettled them. It was Bashir who got the first breakthrough as Louis holed out in the deep. Soon after Brathwaite was bounced out by Atkinson. McKenzie threw his wicket away at the stroke of lunch and provided England the upper hand.
But the duo of Athanaze and Hodge got together and mixed caution with aggression to perfection. Hodge was dropped early on by Root at first slip and he made them pay. Both of them went past their fifties and kept the scoreboard ticking. It was Stokes who broke the 175-run stand as he lured Athanaze and he fell into the trap. Hodge went onto score his maiden Test hundred - it was a brilliant exhibition of Strokeplay from the talented batter.
