First commentary video
Imagine this, it's 2020 and you're randomly browsing tiktok, and you come across something familiar, and you realize...you're looking at someone playing osu! from 3rd person. Something stands out tho, the maps are quite...dog water to say the least, and the gaemplay is underwhelming, but only to you, everyone in the comment seems to impressed with whatever "gameplay" that's going on, on the screen. It's not impressive to you, the maps are bad but what baffles you is the amount views those videos get. So what's the deal with that, why is this happening, why is everyone in the comment acting like an NPC
To my knowledge, the first piece of osu! tiktok I've ever seen, at least according to my memory, is the infamous tiktok of yuliontop's "streams are just too easy bro". Everyone and their mother in the osu! community was basically clowning on him. He later got exposed for cheating and getting banned the next day. Christ made a video about it, be sure to check it out but here's the shitpost that kariyu made [plays clip]
Quite the shitshow as you can see, lots of osu! content creators on YT got something to farm views out of tho so we have yuli to thank for that
After the yuliontop incident, the level of respect that the osu! community has for osu! tiktok content creators went from simple curiosity to basically nonexistent. Thanks yuli.
Okay now why does it matter?
osu! tiktok content has evolved and changed since then. Going from simple stream clips of people playing osu to people playing songs/memes that were trending/popular at the time, and then get a fuck ton of views from them. There isn't exactly any problems with that, but the osu! community really disliked those people due to the low quality mapping and therefore uninteresting gameplay like they're literally just play shitty graveyarded jump maps.
People like userseif, grizzlypng, davolaf started popping off on tiktok and shorts content out of nowhere, to name a few. And the maps they play are...like I mentioned, pretty dogshit. They probably have played like objective good maps before but those usually get buried by the lower quality ones, because the community likes to pick apart people they don't like, or just don't understand.
Davolaf is a bit different tho. My earliest knowledge of him was the tiktok "playing osu! in school" which exploded out of nowhere and kinda propelled him into the spotlight. After that, he joined the fellow osu! tiktok grind by posting the same type of content as other osu! tiktok creators, osu! in 3rd person. The thing is, most if not all maps that he played, were mapped by him. They weren't really the best at first, some weren't even on time, but the point wasn't to impress osu! players, they have a different target audience.
I've talked to a few of them, osu! tiktokers, by that I meant davolaf and userseif, on their streams about the state of osu! tiktoks. And I learned something
First, their target audience isn't osu players. They are aware of how bad the maps are. They don't really care about the community's reception because they're making banks anyways while everyone is crying and clowning on osu! tiktok.
Second, they do genuinely want to get better at mapping and learn how to actually map, which is kinda nice like holy shit they're just like uhhhhh a normal osu! player.
After getting distracted on tiktok instead of writing the script I can say that I'm currently running on 2 braincells and I kinda forgor the point of this video
Okay so osu! tiktok content blah blah what does it bring us. To keep it short, it brings more people into osu!.
osu! is a growing game with a growing community. It kinda exploded during the pandemic as everyone was locked inside and a lot of people seemed to have discovered osu! during this time period, myself included. This specific time frame gave birth to osu! tiktok, and consequencely, introduced a shit ton more people into osu!. Whether it's people that got impressed by the dogshit gameplay, or the cool anime edits in the background, it's matters that the idea of osu! has been implanted into their head, which encourages them to try out the game their favorite tiktokers are playing.
With how much shit that osu! tiktok content gets, I think it's fair to give them the benefit of the doubt that they contribute to the growth of this game, and this community as a whole (we don't talk about osu! twitter) [show image of osu! drama days]
What do you think? How do you feel about osu! tiktok/shorts content in general? It's fun to make fun of them but hey they're getting the bag and sponsors, not you, so really who's the one winning here. Yeah that's it see ya.
