In November of 2018, I teamed up with my buddy Sam from Samuel & Audrey to explore more of the wonderful world of India. We spent eighteen days touring seven incredible cities: Pune, Hyderabad, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad. During that time, we visited amazing historical sites, had life-changing experiences at gorgeous cultural landmarks, and ate some of the best food anywhere on the planet.
With just hours left in India, Sam and I arrived in Mumbai well ahead of our flights back home so we could embark on one last food adventure together: attempting to conquer the biggest thali in the city! Come along with us as we set our sights on the Dara Singh Thali!
If you’ve watched this India series in its entirety, then you know I love a good food challenge, especially when the food is as delicious as this! The Dara Singh Thali at Mini Punjab’s Lakeside is an insane amount of veg and non-veg food, comprising 44 items in total. It weighs 2-3 kilos, requires at least two people to carry it to your table, and is usually meant for 5 or 6 people. But I had this one all to myself. This is the biggest thali I’ve ever had and I couldn’t wait to try it!
This monster of a dish includes curries, parathas, mutton, chicken, biryanis, onions, kachoris, pani puri, a few different drinks, some sweets, and more!
Of course, as the Puri God, I had to start with my favorite dish, pani puri! I filled up the pani with some of the soupy filling (imli pani). It was incredible. When you come to Mumbai, you have to try this sensational dish!
Then I grabbed some naan and began trying all of the different curries, starting with a fish curry in a nice, rich sauce, which had a spicy tomato flavor that I loved. Then I went with a fantastic black bean dal that was rich and flavorful, followed by a Pujabi curry and some dry paneer cubes that had no spice but were still really good!
Next, I went with another favorite of mine, the butter chicken! The tikka chicken in it was perfect! Next were some fried fish nuggets called fish koduva, which was coated with a nice spice mixture that I liked a lot, and was even better with the mint chutney. The tender mincemeat of the mutton seekh kebab with mint chutney had me at a loss for words, and the roasted chicken leg was incredible!
A minced mutton dish was next, and I followed that with Chicken Amritsari, which had a light and very tasty curry. Next was a spinach dish, which was really wonderful, and a prawn curry with a potato paratha, which was absolutely sensational. My next dish was a minty and unusual chicken biryani that was out of this world! It tasted like there were also eggs in it.
Next I had pickles and some amazing chicken achar, a crunchy flatbread, and a chicken kebab mixed with walnuts, which I really liked with the minty-garlic chutney I had. The dal makhni with rice was really good, as was the khichdi, which had a nice marriage of flavors and textures with the curd I tried it with. I had a sip of buttermilk, which I don’t love, and some thick, yogurty lassi, to calm down the heat.
Next was a hot, rich, and buttery lamb curry that fell apart in my mouth; a nice, crunchy kachori; some brothy, chicken-based soup; and a mojito!
Then, I moved on to dessert: some syrupy gulab jamun, some fantastic vanilla ice cream, a flaky and sugary barfi, a sweet jalebi, and some rabdi, which is a thick, condensed milk that’s used as a dipping sauce. Next was the moong dal halwa, which was hot and contained lots of nuts and was amazing with the vanilla ice cream!
Wow! This was one of my favorite dishes and experiences in India so far! I hope you enjoyed watching us try the Dara Singh Thali, the biggest thali in Mumbai!
